Irish violinist Elizabeth Cooney performs internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician.
As a recitalist, she has performed at the Royal Festival Hall, the Wigmore Hall, the National Concert Hall Dublin, the Purcell Room and Conway Hall, London.
As a concerto soloist she has toured numerous times with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Hungary, the Slovenian Philharmonic, appeared on TV with the RTE Concert Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra (recorded live on BBC Radio 3).
She is laureate of many competitions including second prize and audience prize at the Sion-Valais International Competition for Violin in Switzerland; in London, the Seymour Whinyates Prize for Strings, the Ian Stoutzker Award for Violin as well as awards from the Martin Musical Fund and the Maisie Lewis Trust.
Elizabeth frequently guest leads orchestras including the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Welsh National Opera, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and has been invited as guest co leader/principal with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Aurora Orchestra, touring with the latter over the years to Australia, Mexico, Europe as well as annual memorised performances at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
As a chamber musician, Elizabeth has collaborated with renowned pianists Crisina Ortiz, John O'Conor, Finghin Collins, Daniel Hill and Ciara Moroney. She has a keen interest in performing music by living composers and has premiered pieces by Greg Caffrey, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Valentyn Silvestrov, Huw Watkins, Anna Meredith and Alexander Knaifel among others.
She has performed at the Musica Nova Festival in Brazil as well as at the Cambridge Summer Music Festival, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and the Canterbury Festival.
She performs in the Dorette Duo for Violin and Harp with harpist Sally Pryce who she met at the Royal College of Music, London where she studied on scholarship with Itzhak Rashkovsky, subsequently becoming a Junior Fellow there.
Elizabeth's maternal side of the family comes from Connemara and she enjoys the melding of the worlds of classical music with traditional Irish music. She performed US composer Evan Chambers' Concerto for Fiddle and Violin at the Weill Hall at Carnegie with the Royal Irish Academy Orchestra and fiddle player Nollaig Casey. She has also recorded 'Glaoch chun Saoirse' on disc with pianist Finghin Collins - a sonata for violin and piano incorporating old Irish melodies and tunes, composed by renowned musician Charlie Lennon.
She credits the Suzuki method (studying as a child with Patricia Kelleher) for inspiring her love of music and learning in a fun enviroment, playing by memory with friends.
She then studied with Adrian Petcu at the Cork School of Music and played a lot of chamber music from a young age.
At the age of 15, Elizabeth represented Ireland at the European Broadcasting Union's 10th Anniversary Concert as soloist with the Musica Vitae Chamber Orchestra, Sweden with conductor Paavo Jarvi. She went on to win the Strings Final of the RTE Young Musician of the Future and was subsequently awarded a recital at the National Concert Hall, Dublin as the NCH's Rising Star recipient. These formative experiences were all pivotal in her development and progression as a musician.
She now lives in Farnham, UK and performs regularly on film soundtracks in studios including Abbey Road and has completed an MA in Taught Performance from MTU Cork with first class honours.
